Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
