Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
