British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
