British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Film Ruled a 'Significant' Infringement of Media Regulations, Declares UK Media Regulator

The British broadcaster committed a "serious breach" of industry standards by omitting to mention that the presenter of a programme about the Gaza conflict was the child of a Hamas official, as ruled by British broadcasting authority Ofcom.

An investigation by Ofcom into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has determined that the film was "significantly deceptive".

The head of the BBC had earlier expressed regret, saying there had been "a significant failing in relation to accuracy".

The authority has ordered the corporation to transmit a evening declaration about its decisions.

"Since this amounts to a major infringement of our regulations, we are ordering the corporation to transmit a announcement of our conclusions against it on BBC Two at nine o'clock in the evening, with a schedule to be confirmed," the statement read.

'Possibility to Erode Trust'

The authority's report declared: "Our probe determined that the programme's failure to disclose that the narrator's father held a post in the Hamas-controlled administration was materially misleading.

"It meant that the public did not have essential details which may have been extremely pertinent to their assessment of the presenter and the content he presented.

"Confidence is at the center of the connection between a media organization and its audience, notably for a national broadcasting corporation such as the British Broadcasting Corporation.

"This oversight had the possibility to erode the exceptionally strong amounts of confidence that the public would have put in a BBC factual programme about the conflict in Gaza."

The film was pulled from the online platform in February after the narrator's family links came to light, and in this past July an internal BBC review concluded it violated the organization's editorial guidelines on accuracy.

A representative for the broadcaster stated: "The regulator's decision is in agreement with the conclusions of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a significant failing in the programme in relation to the broadcaster's journalistic policies on accuracy, which aligns with clause 2.2 of the authority's broadcasting regulations.

"We have apologised for this and we agree with Ofcom's decision in full. We will follow the sanction as soon as the date and wording are determined."
